Thank you for your interest in Walnut Hills High School. Walnut Hills High School, established in 1895, is a nationally recognized college preparatory school serving students in grades 7 through 12. Upon graduation, many students are accepted to the finest universities and colleges in America. To be eligible to enroll, students must earn qualifying scores on the CPS administered Iowa Assessment, also called the Walnut Hills Entrance Exam (WHEE).
All CPS 6th grade students will have the opportunity to take the WHEE at their home school. For students that do not receive qualifying scores in the Fall, there is an optional second opportunity at the students' school of enrollment during the month of January 2025. Registration for a retake is required. Registration instructions will be provided with the student’s scores from the Fall testing opportunity.
Students currently enrolled in a CPS school in grades 7 through 11 have the option to take the WHEE on a Saturday testing date. Students are allowed to take the exam twice per school year. Registration is required. Students who test in the 2024-2025 school year and earn qualifying scores will be eligible for enrollment at Walnut Hills High School Enrollment in the 2025-2026 school year.
Students not currently enrolled in a CPS school in grades 6 through 11 have the option to take the WHEE on a Saturday testing date. Students are allowed to take the exam twice per year. Registration is required. Students who test in the 2024-2025 school year and earn eligible scores will be eligible for Walnut Hills High School Enrollment in the school year 2025-2026. Students who test for the first time December 7, 2024 or January 11, 2025 will not have an opportunity to retest this school year.
*Test results are sent out approximately 4-6 weeks after the published test dates. Please plan accordingly.
First Time/Retest
Students who test for the first time December 7, 2024 or January 11, 2025 will not have an opportunity to retest this school year.
*Test results are sent out approximately 4-6 weeks after the published test dates. Please plan accordingly.
Students can take the WHEE twice per school year beginning in 6th grade through 11th grade. Students needing a second opportunity to test must wait two months after the first attempt to take their second attempt. The highest scores from both attempts in the same school year are utilized in creating the combined percentile rank.
If students earn qualifying scores on their first attempt, there is no need to test a second time. There is no advantage to earning a higher score if a student qualifies for enrollment.
No. Students who earn qualifying scores are not automatically enrolled in Walnut Hills High School. Once they receive qualifying scores, students must register for WHHS during a Registration Night, which can be found on Walnut Hills website. Registration information is available beginning in January.
No. Any student earning qualifying scores is eligible to register for WHHS for the following school year, beginning in August.
No. Students entering after grade 9 must also be able to meet the Walnut Hills graduation requirements to graduate on time.
Students unable to attend a Saturday exam date due to a religious conflict may arrange for a Thursday morning exam. Students testing on a Thursday morning will need written permission from their school Principal with signature emailed to: whee@cps-k12.org two weeks prior to the scheduled exam date.
If a student not enrolled in a CPS school is applying to take the WHEE and the student has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), a 504 Plan, an English Learner (EL) plan or an Independent Service Plan (ISP), the plan must be submitted with all required documentation to: whee@cps-k12.org by the 3:00 p.m. registration deadline. This information is required to verify and confirm testing accommodations for the WHEE.
Accommodations Information:
Exam results are emailed approximately six weeks after the scheduled exam date to the email address listed in Focus. Once available, exam results can also be in your Focus account - Cincinnati Parent Portal. Exam results are not permitted to be given via telephone.
All applicable documents and payment ($55) must be uploaded by the registration deadline for the student to be confirmed for the selected test date. Confirmation emails are sent once the provided information is verified.

The entire exam takes approximately three (3) hours. Testing begins with reading/vocabulary sections, followed by a short break, then the math/computation sections. Students who completed the computation section are free to exit the examination, though we encourage students to use all available time to review answers, make sure nothing is blank, etc.
CPS Testing does not offer any study materials or recommendations. The examination covers reading comprehension, vocabulary, mathematics, and computation. Parents may want to encourage their children to review grade level content for reading and math. There may be third-party materials out there, however the Testing & Assessment Department has not vetted those products. Parents and guardians should proceed with caution. The Scantron bubble answer sheet is multiple-choice. Children should be aware of how to complete a bubble answer sheet for standardized paper tests.
The examination is grade-level appropriate (i.e., a 7th grader student takes a 7th grade test, a 6th grade student takes a 6th grade test, etc.)
The Iowa Assessments are nationally-normed, reliable assessments used to identify giftedness in specific academic abilities.
All materials for the exam (pencils, scratch paper, etc.) are provided the morning of the exam. Students may bring water and snacks. However, snacks should be consumed during the breaks to minimize disruption.
The exam is scored depending on how far along into the school year we are. There’s no advantage to testing late in the season – we do not recommend waiting.
Students who earned above the minimum score of 65 but below a 75 in a subject area (i.e. scores of 65-74) are encouraged to retest in that subject to give them the best chance of reaching a composite score of 140.
